No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (art. 5, Universal Declaration of Human Rights). No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms).
